PostSubject: [Birthright] Translating the Blood-abilities with 4e sensibilities.   Mon Oct 28, 2013 12:42 pm

I have seen a translation of the abilities which basically well didnt in my opinion actually follow the mindset of 4e in terms of balance (The one who wrote it recognized this to be the case) for one thing it featured the same die roll to determine what abilities you obtained as in the original system and for another thing abilities which would be purely cosmetic and simply DM granted (again in my opinion) are coming in via the same acquisition method as those which would be quite potent.

Here is a link to the Google Doc (pdf) - I am talking about

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B9LYoEBEEaWoOWYyMjI1N2EtOGVhZS00OGRiLWEyMzYtNGFlOGYzZmU5YzIy/edit?usp=drive_web&authkey=CImE_6cK&urp=http://www.birthright.net/forums/archive/index.php&pli=1&hl=en

I come at this from the POV of a 4e fan who thinks 4e actually has some elements which could support Birthright very well

One suspects Lugh Long-hand Samildánach (a wright/carpenter, a sailor, a smith/bronze craftsman, a healer, a champion, a harpist, a poet/historian, a sorcerer, cupbearer) would agree.

For instance in a normal Campaign "Long Life" amounts to flavor text I would allow with no more price than a reasonably interesting story ie it might be nothing more than background. (I can even see it similarly handled a campaign were one might have been empowered by inheritance or usurpation)

Long Life Minor, Major, Great

You enjoy a greatly increased life span, as your aging process is vastly slowed down.

Derivation(s): All
Benefit (Minor): You age only one year for every five that pass.

Benefit (Major): You age only one year for every twenty five that pass.

Benefit (Great): You age only one year for every century that passes.

Any opinions?

Agelessness is sufficiently in-obvious that you are unlikely to become aware of it... during play... unless you are absconded by faeries and returned to the world in the future ;p, or encounter a beast whose necrotic attack uses aging as its methodology... and you discover you are freakishly immune.

Having a stronger life-force might make resistance to necrotic attack appropriate anyway as might accelerated recovery of some sort.

Some races or racial abilities seem more appropriate as blood-lines in the context of a Birthright like setting. (I personally want something touching Arthurian Myth more than birthright already does). For instance Being of Fae Blood was fairly common and as a blood-line that could abscond with elves and half elves couldn't it?? OR Wouldn't the Deva, be a reincarnating hero with training and ideals of a different age sound like the kind of thing you hand to a King Arthur?

I am adopting the term Karma points instead of regency to help point out how you don't have to use public service to gain this empowerment ;p.

I suppose that means I am applying my own sensibilities to this not just 4e's.

The Heralds Gift: Birthright is very much a merger between Arthurian tales and the Highlander (Born to be Kings) mythos. I find myself wanting to start at its roots many of the blood-line abilities dont quite connect for me or have lost their flavor in the previous rules sets.
The ability to sense those of blood-lines and the abilty to sense empowered entities in general merge under the power of naming - "I know his name" and "sensing of the quickening" become like the paladins sensitivity to otherworld evil/good. The magical blood-lines mentioned in Arthurian tales are generally Daemonic and Fae,as well as Draconic (The Pendragon family) and Divine Royalty which also have historic basis. - some of the tales actually attribute Lancelot/Galahad as of Divine blood.

This seems a broad aid to perception and insight wrt to specific subjects rather than a Detect Function... its even a likely thing to be triggered by passive perception and modified by things like is the bloodlined individual an Awakened Scion or Not... are they a true blood (do they count as Dragon/Divine/Fae/Daemonic) etc.

I am currently thinking many of these abilities will be Boons/Blessings this should keep them more flexible than either feats or class abilities.
