What are you favorite non-D&D RPGs?

Here are mine in no particular order:

- Call of Cthulhu: I like the game because it makes you feel mortal. I like the occasional game that requires a different approach instead of charging and slaying the monster.

- Legend of the Five Rings: I like Japanese culture. What else can I say?

- Savage Worlds: A good/simple generic system. It's pretty good when you want to run a game but are unsure of what system to use.

- 13th Age: It has a lot of 4e's feel but manages to feel different at the same time.

- BRP (Basic RolePlay): Another Chaosium game. This is another generic system that I like quite a bit.

- Song of Ice and Fire RPG: Haven't got to play this one just yet. But I'm currently reading through it and like it.

- Swords & Wizardry: This is technically OD&D but I couldn't help but put it here. It helps when you are feeling up to some old school adventure.

World of Darkness: I like the World of Darkness in general. The lore is pretty interesting.

I have only rarely played a non-D&D RPG. I played in a Changeling game (WoD) for about 4 months. I very briefly played in a Deadlands game, but the GM had modified the rules to fit what he was trying to do. I have run the latest edition of Gamma World (although ostensibly that is 4E D&D). And I played one session of a Rogue Trader game (after about 12 hours of creating a character).

The WoD system seemed to work well for a story-based game system. But we spend a vast amount of time on narrative exchange, so I didn't see much of the mechanics in action anyway.

By far and away my favorite non-D&D rpg would be Mage the Ascension (i.e. Old World of Darkness) using my completely rebuilt game engine (which we refer to as "White Book Mage" to distinguish it from "Purple Book" [OWoD] and "Blue Book" [NWoD] Mage). It is the end result of putting the WoD game engine (old and new) through the same sort of "question everything" approach the design group for 4E did with D&D in order to build the strongest and most coherent game possible for our group.

A close second would be Mutants & Masterminds, which easily beats out HERO/Champions for best superhero game engine by far and away. I prefer 3rd Edition (which added a number of 4E-ish improvements to the system), but tend to play 2nd Edition mostly due to having all the books on PDF and everyone having those rules available for the Hero Labs program.

It's been a long time since I played anything else. There are plenty that I would love to try - 13th Age and Mouseguard in particular.
I can remember having great fun with several games in my teen years. But I wasn't one who would studied the rules. Can I get a character on a piece of paper that I understand? I'm good to go. I remember having great fun with Star Wars, Gamma World, Aftermath!, TMNT, some super heroes game or other, Paranoia...
At the end of the day a really crappy system can still be fun if you play with a good group. To me the group is more important than the game. I'll play any old game if I got to play with the right group.
GMing is a different matter. I'm not going to GM a game if I don't feel good about the system. That's why the only D&D is 4e. I guess you could push me to red box/basic, its so rules light I could make something work if really pressed to run a game for the right people.

Favorite non-D&D RPGs...

...I've already played: 13th Age, Dungeon World, Stormbringer 1st Edition.
...that I want to try, but haven't: Mutant City Blues, Dogs in the Vineyard, Shadowrun 5th Edition, Ars Magica 5th Edition, Golden Sky, Maid the RPG, Stormbringer 5th Edition, Mouseguard.

My main obstruction is that my player bases are really into the D&D thing.

I know a few people that have played Maid. I hear it's quite the odd game.

Some of my favorites include:

DCC RPG - it does an excellent job of capturing the feel of the early days.

Palladium Fantasy - this game took over our gaming group; think D&D with MORE of everything.

SteamCraft - a steampunk game with easy, intuitive rules.
